Join our Brooklyn Navy Yard Farm Manager, Gareth Stacke, as he covers the essential components of season-long crop planning. From spring starts to fall cover crops, he’ll walk you through steps to ensure you can get the most out of your garden, small farm, or plot this year.
A successful growing season begins with the foundation of a crop plan (with wiggle room for MONA of course). Dive into the cyclical nature of growing, from seed buying to seed starting to planting and finally harvesting before starting over again. There is a method and Gareth is here to shine that sunny light!
Each participant will leave with a scalable template to begin crop planning their space for a bountiful 2021. This workshop is open to all who want to learn more- from urban farming beginners to those looking to scale up their garden, small farm or backyard plot to long time farmers looking for a fresh perspective! Wherever you are on your plan(t)ning journey, this is the place to start.
Topics include:
- Sharing sustainable seed suppliers
- How to pull the growing information from your seed packet or supplier website
- Creating a crop plan
- Brief overview of propagation/seed sowing: tray size, growing medium, to cover or not to cover, different types of germination chambers and why we use them
- seasonality of crops
- planning out days to maturity
- succession planting
- bed rotation

This tier is at the market rate and reflects the true cost of the service, labor and expertise of producing the workshop/event. This price point allows us to generate a profit. We encourage those with access to wealth to opt for this tier as it enables Brooklyn Grange to offer more tickets at an accessible price.
-
This tier reflects the cost of our service labor and expertise required to produce the workshop/event and allows us to make a small profit. We encourage those to opt for a Sustainable Ticket if the price point of a General Ticket is prohibitive.
-
This ticket tier reflects our intention to make our events open for all! We want all members of our community to enjoy Brooklyn Grange no matter their financial situation. Opt for the Solidarity ticket if General or Sustainable is not accessible to you right now.
About Gareth Stacke: Gareth is an experienced vegetable farmer with a passion for community organizing. Born in Santa Cruz, California, he was raised in the Bay Area before moving to Portland, Oregon to attend Lewis & Clark College, where he studied how the Black Power and Civil Rights movements shaped American History. From there, he dove straight into farming, beginning as an apprentice at Portland’s Zenger Farm, a 2.3 acre, sustainable vegetable farm. A quick and eager student, Gareth knew he would do well to farm at and learn from as many operations as he could, so he spent the next several years moving from Sauvie Island Organics, a 20-acre CSA farm to Our Table Cooperative, a 7-acre cooperatively owned and managed vegetable operation, ultimately returning to Zenger as co-manager in 2016. Between farming seasons, Gareth planted community orchards across the city through an organization called Portland Fruit Tree Project. All of this thoroughly amused his mother, given that Gareth vehemently hated vegetables as a child.
In April 2018, Gareth moved to NYC, drawn to the fast pace and diversity of the city. He spent his first year running a gardening program at Wyckoff House Museum, the oldest building in New York. Located in the primarily Caribbean neighborhood of East Flatbush, he loved the opportunity to grow crops like Pigeon Peas and Callaloo for the community.
