FABRIC ALCHEMY: AN EXPLORATION OF NATURALLY OCCURRING MATERIALS AND THEIR HEALING QUALITIES

  • Brooklyn Grange at Navy Yard 63 Flushing Avenue Brooklyn, NY, 11205 United States (map)

In this workshop, participants will learn about and explore Fabric Alchemy through collage artwork. Mahdiyyah will guide you on the use of recycled, bio-based(contains at least 20% renewable carbon content) fabric scraps to hand stitch your very own fabric collage artwork, while also teaching you how the use of naturally-occurring fabrics can heal the body. The collaging technique results from the combination of piecing together various parts to form a new picture, and in a similar fashion the alchemical process involves transforming a base material into something more purposeful.

This workshop is perfect for those of you who are interested in nature, textiles, healing, art, and how all four can intersect to create something of great value. If you’ve ever considered exploring other mediums of art, want to sew(no experience necessary), and learn a few facts about natural materials and sustainability this is the workshop for you.

Our workshops and events are available at a sliding scale. We invite you to practice economic solidarity with your community and choose the ticket tier that makes most sense with your financial situation.

  • This tier is at the market rate and reflects the true cost of the service, labor and expertise of producing the workshop/event. This price point allows us to generate a profit. We encourage those with access to wealth to opt for this tier as it enables Brooklyn Grange to offer more tickets at an accessible price.

  • This tier reflects the cost of our service labor and expertise required to produce the workshop/event and allows us to make a small profit. We encourage those to opt for a Sustainable Ticket if the price point of a General Ticket is prohibitive.

  • This ticket tier reflects our intention to make our events open for all! We want all members of our community to enjoy Brooklyn Grange no matter their financial situation. Opt for the Solidarity ticket if General or Sustainable is not accessible to you right now.

About Mahdiyyah Muhammad

Mahdiyyah is a Fabric Alchemist, Artist, Fashion Designer, and Sewing Instructor. She began creating at a very young age, with a natural skill for taking recycled materials and breathing new life into them. She draws inspiration from her practice of fabric alchemy; with the ability to take recycled, bio-based materials and turn them into one of one works of wearable art that hold healing properties. Taken from her research of naturally-occurring fibers, and the effects they have on the body, each design is created with intentional fabric carrying high vibrational frequency like linen, cotton, wool, and organic cotton. Knowing the body in its optimal health has a vibrational frequency of 100, and fabrics line linen and wool contain an extremely high frequency of 5000, she carefully selects her design materials with this in mind. Mahdiyyah speaks more about this in her educational fabric classes, and instructional sewing workshops.
