You’ve probably seen these little guys around town. They’re not baby greens...they’re not sprouts... they’re microgreens! Microgreens are tiny, edible greens grown from the same seeds as your market vegetables and herbs. They also happen to be one of the most nutrient-dense foods out there and are easy to grow– even in an NYC apartment all-year-round!
Join us at our Sunset Park Greenhouse as Farmer Jane walks you through the planting and harvesting process. We’ll cover topics like seed purchasing and storage, growing medium preparation, seeding density for different types, and simple ways to build at-home systems.
All participants will take home a delicious clam of micros!
Our workshops and events are available at a sliding scale. We invite you to practice economic solidarity with your community and choose the ticket tier that makes most sense with your financial situation.
-
This tier is at the market rate and reflects the true cost of the service, labor and expertise of producing the workshop/event. This price point allows us to generate a profit. We encourage those with access to wealth to opt for this tier as it enables Brooklyn Grange to offer more tickets at an accessible price.
-
This tier reflects the cost of our service labor and expertise required to produce the workshop/event and allows us to make a small profit. We encourage those to opt for a Sustainable Ticket if the price point of a General Ticket is prohibitive.
-
This ticket tier reflects our intention to make our events open for all! We want all members of our community to enjoy Brooklyn Grange no matter their financial situation. Opt for the Solidarity ticket if General or Sustainable is not accessible to you right now.
About Jane Scruggs: Originally hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas Jane has spent the better part of the past decade diving deep into the world of horticulture and urban agriculture through various training programs all around New York City. After enrolling in the horticulture certificate program at the New York Botanic Garden, Jane couldn’t wait to get her hands in the dirt, so she started volunteering at the Edible Schoolyard. There she found a mentor and a space to test out everything she was learning in her classes at NYBG. Shortly thereafter Jane took a position as an Americorps with New York Restoration Project where she gained invaluable knowledge of NYC native plants and trees. But quickly Jane realized her true calling was in growing food so she left NYC to try her hand working a full season on an organic vegetable farm in North Carolina. We’re happy she did because that’s where Jane discovered her love of working in the greenhouse. Once back in NYC and always ready to learn more, Jane decided to enroll in the Farm School NYC certificate program. She eventually found her way to us as a seasonal farm crew member and has since come on board as our Microgreens Manager. In her spare time, Jane can be found volunteering at the Kelly Street Community Garden near her home in the South Bronx, growing food and giving it away to community members, doing yoga, or playing with her cat Chloë.
