ROOFTOP FARMS & VEGETABLE GARDENS
Over the past decade, Brooklyn Grange has built and operated over five acres of rooftop farm space. We utilize our experiences, know-how, and mountains of spreadsheets to design, plan and execute an edible space that fits your vision and needs. Whether it's a small terrace container garden or an acre of rooftop, we can help you grow produce for your home, business or community.

You can grow most annual and perennial crops in New York City! Spring and fall crops include lettuces, chicories, spinach, brassicas like broccoli, kale, cabbage, and cauliflower, as well as peas, radishes, and turnips. Summer crops include tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash, cucumbers, and more. Perennial and annual herbs, like basil, dill, parsley, cilantro, sage, oregano, and thyme, are a welcome addition to any NYC garden. And if you have the space, we love planting fruit bearing shrubs and trees, such as blueberries, raspberries, figs, cherries, and apples.

With any edible garden or rooftop farm, the more love you put into the plants, the more they give you! If you’re hands on and want to be involved in growing the crops yourself, Brooklyn Grange can support you with monthly or quarterly check-ins. If you’d prefer us to take the reins, we can visit your garden as often as once a week! For rooftop farms of larger scale, daily or multiple visits per week may be required.

For roof and terrace gardens, there are many factors to consider before moving forward with a design including sun exposure, access to the space, water access, roof strength, and stewardship. Brooklyn Grange can help assess these conditions and determine if an edible garden or rooftop farm is the right fit for your project. Once the design is in place, our urban agricultural experts can help align your production goals with a detailed crop plan, and if need be, help train you, your staff, or your clients on cultivation techniques.
