If you know how to transplant a seedling, but are still working on making your full garden vision come to life, this is the workshop for you! If you've attended our "Planning an Urban Vegetable Garden" workshop, this is a great next step, but no prerequisites are needed! For this class you should have a general sense of goals for your green space. Malik will help you plan next steps, including ensuring drainage, soil, and light requirements are appropriate. She will offer plant recommendations for urban settings, ecological considerations, and confirm you have appropriate access and set up for long term success, as well as maintenance considerations for your space, and appropriate vendors to reach out to. As a class we will also go through a few garden case studies that have gone through a revamp, discussing why certain design decisions were made as well as potential opportunities. We will leave 20 minutes at the end of class to answer all of your burning questions, though we ask that questions are framed in a way that will be helpful for all attendees. Please note this is not a consultation, but rather a course that is designed to set you up with the tools to envision, design and execute your own urban garden or landscape.

About Malik Saric:
Born and raised in Manhattan, Malik was always a stranger to soil. It wasn't until he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to teach English, and took a few cross-country road trips camping with his dog, that he deepened his relationship with the natural environment. Since then, he moved back to New York to garden in a variety of public and private green spaces in all five boroughs.
Malik brings a can-do attitude to Design/Build, where no task can't be accomplished and no skill can't be learned. A teacher at heart, he prioritizes the personal and professional development of his crew. And like many teachers, he's always well-stocked with snacks for himself and his team.
In between site visits, you're likely to find Malik working on the daily crossword. When the workday is done, he can usually be found skating at Cooper Park or working in his garden in front of his home in Bushwick.
