CANCELLATION POLICY | MASK POLICY | PROOF OF VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS| WEATHER & COVID POLICY | BROOKLYN GRANGE COVID SAFETY PRACTICES
Did you know that all of the worker bees are female? How can you tell a queen bee apart from the others? Have you ever wondered what honey bees do during the colder months? Get your answers to these questions and much more at the winter introduction to beekeeping with our guest Beekeeper Courtney Epton. It’ll leave you buzzing with excitement!
Courtney will provide you with a crash course in apiculture, walking participants through a brief history of beekeeping, the beekeeper’s calendar, and the special challenges of keeping bees in an urban setting. We'll discuss the anatomy of a honey bee; the biology and life cycle of the colony; as well as equipment, hive architecture and basics in beekeeping safety.
This workshop is perfect for those of you who are considering beekeeping for the first time and want to learn more before bee season is in full swing. If this is the year for you to dive into beekeeping, this is a great place to start!
Our workshops and events are available at a sliding scale. We invite you to practice economic solidarity with your community and choose the ticket tier that makes most sense with your financial situation.
-
This tier is at the market rate and reflects the true cost of the service, labor and expertise of producing the workshop/event. This price point allows us to generate a profit. We encourage those with access to wealth to opt for this tier as it enables Brooklyn Grange to offer more tickets at an accessible price.
-
This tier reflects the cost of our service labor and expertise required to produce the workshop/event and allows us to make a small profit. We encourage those to opt for a Sustainable Ticket if the price point of a General Ticket is prohibitive.
-
This ticket tier reflects our intention to make our events open for all! We want all members of our community to enjoy Brooklyn Grange no matter their financial situation. Opt for the Solidarity ticket if General or Sustainable is not accessible to you right now.
About Courtney Epton:
Courtney Epton began beekeeping 6 years ago in her time as Director of Education for City Growers. Two hives grew to five (and beyond!), and Courtney’s love and fascination for bees followed suit. Since then, Courtney has been the beekeeper for City Growers, the Department of Education’s Environmental Study Center, and now even keeps bees on a rooftop in Brooklyn. An educator through and through, beekeeping has been the ideal pursuit - no matter how much a beekeeper might learn, there’s always more to observe, unlearn, and discover!
