ISLAND TRADITIONS: CARIBBEAN COOKING CLASS

  • Brooklyn Grange at Sunset Park 850 3rd Avenue Brooklyn, NY, 11232 United States (map)
SCHOLARSHIPS | CANCELLATION POLICY | MASK POLICY | PROOF OF VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS| WEATHER & COVID POLICY | BROOKLYN GRANGE COVID SAFETY PRACTICES
Join Damaris Oliveras of Island Life Kitchen in a cooking class based in indigenous tradition.
In the kitchen we’ll be exploring and honoring methods used in indigenous Caribbean cuisine as well as tools and ingredients found on the islands inhabited by Tainos. While getting our hands busy, we’ll be looking closely at the history and the evolution of food between the Caribbean and the East Coast. We'll acknowledge the land theft and colonization of the Spaniards and the history of forced African migration.
These cultural influences are still seen in Caribbean cuisine to this day. The landscape of island tradition is so complex and full of rich history that can be felt and celebrated in food!   Join us in an exploration of food and history from the Caribbean to the East Coast of the United States to discuss the evolutionary changes in island food influenced by the diaspora of Puerto Riceños and changes in environmental access to ingredients and food that are seen and felt today!

Our workshops and events are available at a sliding scale. We invite you to practice economic solidarity with your community and choose the ticket tier that makes most sense with your financial situation.

  • This tier is at the market rate and reflects the true cost of the service, labor and expertise of producing the workshop/event. This price point allows us to generate a profit. We encourage those with access to wealth to opt for this tier as it enables Brooklyn Grange to offer more tickets at an accessible price.

  • This tier reflects the cost of our service labor and expertise required to produce the workshop/event and allows us to make a small profit. We encourage those to opt for a Sustainable Ticket if the price point of a General Ticket is prohibitive.

  • This ticket tier reflects our intention to make our events open for all! We want all members of our community to enjoy Brooklyn Grange no matter their financial situation. Opt for the Solidarity ticket if General or Sustainable is not accessible to you right now.
